The agricultural world is abuzz with news of a viral outbreak that's threatening canola crops across South Australia. Dr. Nicole Thompson, a researcher at SARDI, has sounded the alarm on Turnip Yellow Virus (TuYV), a disease spread by the Green Peach Aphid.
In a recent GRDC webinar, Dr. Thompson shared her concerns about the severity of the outbreak, which she described as "pretty severe" across most canola-growing regions. The virus causes yellowing and purpling of leaves, often starting from the edges and moving inward. However, Dr. Thompson warns that TuYV can also be asymptomatic, making field diagnosis a challenging task.
"One thing that immediately stands out is the potential for this virus to fly under the radar," she says. "If you're not actively looking for it, you might miss the early signs, and by then, it could be too late to prevent its spread."
The Green Peach Aphid, a known vector for TuYV, thrives in 'green bridges,' which include perennial weeds, forage brassica, and volunteer canola. Dr. Maarten van Helden, also from SARDI, emphasizes the importance of vigilance, especially given the unusually high aphid populations this year. "Normally, we see small numbers of aphids later in the season, but this year is different. We need to be proactive in our management strategies," he adds.
Dr. van Helden suggests that agronomists and farmers should consider using pesticides like Versys and MainMan, which have shown effectiveness against the aphids. However, he cautions that timing is critical, and the wet and cold weather conditions could impact the efficacy of these applications.
In addition to TuYV, another canola disease, Sclerotinia stem rot, has been detected in areas across Victoria and New South Wales. Dr. Kurt Lindbeck, a pathologist at the NSW Department of Primary Industries, advises against premature use of fungicides. "The optimal timing is crucial," he says. "We want to wait until 20-30% flowering, when the crop canopy is open, to ensure effective coverage and penetration of the fungicide."
